Electric water heater as buffer tank.

Are the taps for the heating elements on a electric water heater a standard pipe thread? I Am thinking of using one for an inexpensive buffer tank in a primary/secondary system with this tank in primary loop. Thanks.

1" NPT on most. Some still use that 4 bolt pattern, but Johnstone Supply has a 4 bolt to NPT adapter.
I buy 1" NPT to 1-1/4" copper adapters if you need to move a lot of GPM.
