Finding good contractors

I wanted to add/replace some main vents on our one-pipe steam system. (It's a second floor system but the only main vent is in the basement; I'd like to add some on or around the second floor, perhaps. Let me know if this is foolish!) I also wanted to add a radiator to the kitchen, which has no heat. (It used to have one of those heater-stoves with the heater on the left side.) I'm hoping that our boiler is up to the task, but I'm somewhat suspicious that it's too darn big for our heating system already anyway.

I tried calling one of the bigger local plumbers/heating contractors around Boston that I've had good experience with, and the person I talked to didn't know what a main vent is.

Now, I'm pretty ignorant, but it seems to be that this is a bad sign. I suppose I'll look elsewhere.

How would you guys recommend finding a competent professional? If they double as everyday plumbers, is this generally a bad sign? Are there certain questions/qualifications I should be asking about?

dan holohan doesnt call it that for nothing, perhaps you should buy the book in this site and give it to your favorite heating person - with the the promise of a job after the person has finished reading the book - it will be money well spent - or click on the top link on the left, put in you zip and get quotes from nearby contractors
