Those of you with old U.S. Radiator Co. catalogs

When you get a chance, could you please look and see if this boiler appears in one of your catalogs? It's a Capitol Model 25-4, and I think it dates back to the 1930s. I'm looking for an interior view to see how the vertical flueways are arranged and whether or not I can baffle them.

Thanks in advance, and happy holidays.

    Frank,

I know you have the same books as me, but under the hopes I have one you do not, I checked Byrley's (assuming you might not have that one) and found nothing.

Why not just pull the smoke pipe and/or one of the more obvious access doors and see wassupwitdat bad boy first hand?

Some of the bolts looked a bit rusty

so I want to "look inside" without trying to remove and possibly break them.

I do have Byrley, but as you found it didn't have an illustration for that model series.

    25-4 Capitol Boiler

I have a catalog that inlcudes information on "The New Capitol Boiler" dated April, 1928. I don't have a way to post to The Wall, but could fax you the pages describing it. It is a four part boiler consisting of a base, firepot, one intermidiate section, and dome. Looking at the assembly of the Winchester (a similar boiler), I am sure the intermediate section is one with outer holes (four slots at the peremiter of the section) as opposed to the other type with one larger center hole. The literatire states "One of the factors accounting for the higher efficiency of the Capitol is the staggered flue, which insures a long fire-travel before the hot gases leave the boiler".

There is not a cut-a-way detail of the 25-4, but there is one of the Winchester. In addition, a picture is shown of each section, center hole and outer hole for the 25-x series. Let me know if you would like me to fax them.
  • Steamhead , I don't have the catalog

but I might have the next best thing - pics of this boiler broken down in sections . It looks exactly like a boiler we replaced a few years ago . I'll see if I can track down the job .

    Thanks, Ken and Ron

but it appears there were more than one 25-4 boiler in USRC's line. The one I'm looking for is a square boiler, 25-inches wide, 4-sections deep and with what looks like vertical flues.

Here's a pic- this one shows the name plate.
