Have a wee look at one of the latest energy saving units we are now looking into to heat UK homes.
www.senertec.de they are a German company owner by UK's Baxi. If you get to their home page click on the English version at the bottom right corner, it's very interesting.
Other people looking into CHP units are Microgen, Vaillant, Honda and British Gas, to name but a few.
Is this trade not the best or what? it's like working for NASA!
Kind regards.

Combined Heat and Power
Jimmie,
I have been hearing about co-generation for a coulpe of years know. First heard about it at the first wetstock and then a long post form Mark Eatherton. He seems to have a real handle on where this is going.
Your right, this industry is heading in a cool direction.
Hang on guys, this is Not your fathers heating system.

Micro CHP
Despite recent developments (e.g., the unit in development by Yankee Scientific) the payback of a Micro CHP investment is in the range of 5 to 10 years. This estimate includes the effect of electric "net metering", which is available in MA. and other states.
The additional benefit of emergency power backup may shorten the payback for some.

Hello Jimmy *~/:)
something i find interesting is the nasa catylitic converter.....while slightly off topic it seems like another excellent return on investment... After reading the site page , ifilled in the form and they sent me some tech bullitens and lots of fancy pictures... I cant say that i totally understand the german language buh its close enough to the stuff we jabber so, one of the things i noticed was the 240/400v ratings....hmmmm.....my buddy is German and we got a garbage disposal for his fatherin law there is a vast difference in price of appliances say in aGerman model and an american one....so,then it makes me wonder about lash ups to back peddle electricty.0 -
Payback?
Back in 90 I worked on the installation of a cogen. Gas turbine made by Solar, 9megawatt output plus 40,000 lbs./hr. of 225lb. steam. $11,000,000 to install, payback in 3yrs.. 6" 375psi gas line feeding that sucker. I was also involved in some of the maintainance during the 90's. The owner was happy as a clam. I ran into one of the operators the other day and asked how the cogen was doing? He said it's been mothballed, nat. gas too expensive. They run it once a month just to keep everything up to snuff. The owner of this machine is, I believe, the largest owner of nat gas in the U.S.. So much for CHP. bob0 -
Efficient?
How can they claim to be "three times more efficient"?
Just curious.0 -
Thanks to all.
Thanks to all for your posts, I think with all the big guns looking into this type of unit there's a lot of R&D still to be done. Also if the UK government are thinking about it, there's other motives other than energy saving (oops! I spoke out and dared to question our pinkco useless government).
Seasons Greetings.

40 percent bran flakes.....
why not just put the other 60 % back in the box like we usedto get when we bought them?0 -
Jimmy i think you have violated the Scots gambit in
Morningside Cresent...The lot done in on upton may not be able to find any ready avenue other than have you disqualified from the gamme entirely...0 -
CHP efficiency
"How can they claim to be "three times more efficient"?
Most electrical devices are supplied by fossil-fuel fired power stations and have an overall efficiency in the region of 35 or 40%. The function of those hour-glass shaped cooling towers is to throw away low-grade heat from the steam turbines into the atmosphere. There are also transmission losses in moving the electricity to the consumer.
If a CHP machine uses the low-grade heat on-site, for heating or domestic hot water, the thermal efficiency can be 85%+. The problem is in matching the electrical demand with a year-round heat demand.
A kW of gas is typically about 1/3rd of the cost of a kW of electricity. The costs, vary as mentioned above: many CHP companies are no longer installing new commercial machines here.0
