Do you think a circulator can

get tired? Went to a job the other day I had installed 4 years ago. 3 infloor zones, 2 baseboard 1 Indirect. 2 of the infloor zones were not heating enough to satisfy the t-stat setting. The circulators (both Taco 007) were circulating water but very very slow. I replaced one of them w/ a new Taco 007 and the other w/ a new Grundfos Up1542f both new circulators brought the temps. up in no time. Both old 007's are clean inside and run when power is applied. Seems as though these circs are running out of gusto. Any thoughts?

they were on thier way Out.
you just caught them in time....pure sh ..luck. if you get a call that a grunfoss isnt heating a zone etc. some times you can buy a few hours by having them change the speed of the recirc after opening the screw and giving the pump shaft a bit of a twist with a screw driver...some times...dont count on that always working...its a chance over the phone too get there in a while with the pump.tacos pull the cartridge done deal.0 -
Pumps slowing down?
The pump slowing down is a misconception. It may slowdown because of system related problems like iron oxide, or lime deposits collecting between the bearing races and the pump shaft adding friction, and slowing the motor rpms down, but not enough to have an impact on the net flow. When the pump fails it usually fails catastrophically, and would need to be replaced. However, one the attributes of the Taco circulator is you can replace the cartridge only leaving you with more Christmas shopping money. Merry Christmas!

What about the impeller wheel...
can this wear down over time? Are there different materials used for the impellers? Could water in the system contain certain minerals that contribute to this? Seems I heard this discussed previously (here)?0 -
Joe, I got sad news.....
IF I could actually buy a cartridge for LESS than the whole pump, more shopping money would be had.....I do change just the cartridge for convenience sake at times, but not for cost...I buy the pumps a dozen at a time and no one around here can/will even sniff at that price for the cartridge.
Go figger....

I'd look at impeller wear
also. For some reason the composite material impellers wear, or disengrate, under some conditions. My experience show this to be the cause of changing performance.
There was a post about this down lower.
