Dumb Question

I am out here reading and trying to learn about heating systems - one thing i cannot understand, and it is probably not important, but I am curious - why is a dropped header easier to install? Is it better or worse than a "undropped" header? Like I said, purely a curious question as I endeavor to learn more about Steam.

And yes, i plan to order some of Dan's books!(I asked for them for xmas!)

  • When you have to connect

2 boiler risers together without the drop , you need the last pipe exactly the right size to get them to mate . And mating them is not easy with the tight clearance . With the drop header , you have extra swing so the last pipe can be off and still be able to connect the pipes . With larger sized headers it's a nice timesaver .

it has an extra set of swing joints

that make it easier to line up the pipes..because of the extra swing the riser center to center measurement may be 24 inches, for example, and the center to center measurement when put together at the header can be for example, 22 inches..or 26'', or 25''...see how exact measurements arn't required anymore..much easier..and makes drier steam to boot..and they sure look pretty..but the trade off is more material and its not cheap if using 4'' cast iron fittings..

    And

it can let you install taller risers from the boiler to the header, which helps separate water from steam. But Ron and Gerry explained the main reason we like them.

    Plus, they look really cool!

    Yeah.... they ARE Chunky!!!!!!

I really can't help myself...everytime I'm piping in a new steam boiler I feel guilty if I don't do it. Mad Dog
