Monitor Heater Humor

So, last July I move into an apartment about 8 miles South of Canada on Lake champlain. The apartment is in the basement of a rich couples house. They only have electric heat throughout the house, with a woodstove on the 1st floor and Monitor MPI 40 kerosene heater in the basement apartment. I am told that the unit has been recently cleaned and serviced. I have a full tank of Kero when I move in. All is well until last night. Temp is about -14 outside. Temp in apartment is 70, heater set at 72. It runs about an hour to maintain setpoint (which it finally reaches), then shuts off. Next time it comes on for about 10 minutes and shuts off with the burner status lights blinking. I have no manual for it. The landlord is not home. I'm thinking maybe no fuel, go outside and check and find 3/4 tank. I surf the net for help and find nothing but negativity towards this unit. One thing I did notice was there was a clicking or thuumping sound right before it shut down. I search this and find that the unit may be starved for fuel. How could this be if the tank is 3/4 full? I go back outside and check the outlet valve upstream of the filter. The valve is about 70% closed! I open all the way, come inside and find the unit working fine. It runs for about 2 hours before finally shutting down after bringing the apartment from 64 to 72. I really have to find my own house since I can not stand to have to question somebody else's system. Is it possible for Kero to gell up at all like fuel oil does at times?

uhmmm...does sound like water to me...
are ther two lines commong and going from the burner? two lines comming in from the tank? it sounds like water or a vacumm leak on the suction side of the pump...that means it doesnt draw the oil properly...water in the fuel from two pipe systwms usually shows up in the oil filter...do you have a fuel filter on it? a thing called a combi with tiger written on the bowl ? some times they are a little loose and the lowest part of the bowl needs to be tightened. By hand!.0 -
This unit only runs on Kero and no it doesn't gel like fuel oil. That valve being partially closed was a mistake as this unit is gravity feed. It could have been left closed by mistake or I have seen a garden hose dragged and catch one and closing it. The one closed by the hose was in a green house and agter getting grief from the owner forn not getting right there he shut up when he saw it was his crews fault. In a basement apartment this heater should be great.

Only one line. Gravity fed. Valve was about 70% closed. Took several turns to open it all the way. Has a fuel filter on it just out of the tank. Was told the filter was replaced this summer. So far all is well. There was an error rendering this rich post.
