Humphrey Radiant Fire Gas Insert

Does anyone know how to operate one of these old beauties? I suspect the knob controls gas flow and then the fire must be lit by hand...like and old style gas range. And, do they need to be operated with the ceramic inserts or can I operate mine without?

If that's the actual model you have, I'd seriously consider sending it to one of the numerous old heater restoration places for a complete tune-up. Believe that one fetches 1000s of $$$

Look on internet for such firms. I certainly wouldn't operate without the ceramic as such is integral to its function. Replacements for most are still made (believe it or not).

If you operate that thing at all

First have it tested for carbon monoxide, AFTER it is hooked up but BEFORE you use it. I've seen these things put out over 2500 parts per million (PPM) of CO if they are not adjusted properly. This is a job for a pro, and the results will be almost meaningless unless it is tested under conditions of actual use.

Second, check the building/gas codes in your area. In many areas, these are illegal to use unless vented to the outside, and in some areas they are illegal, period.

Actually, that is the model I will be buying....

Not sure if I will have mine reconditioned. Maybe in the future.

Wanted to know if anyone knew how they operated and how WELL they operated seeing they had been out of service YEARS before I was born! Plenty of friends of mine in Hoboken, NJ have these left over in their brownstones and a house two doors down from me has one also. Seen them working and they worked VERY well and added pure ambience to the room. Nonetheless, I wanted some advice from the Wetheads here first!
