Annual income, just wondering.

For the contractors out there, just out of curiosity, what kind of salary do you guys bring home?
Do you have partners?
How many employees?
How long in business?

This is a tough thing to judge. I often wonder how I'm doing, financially speaking, as compared with others in my trade around the country and locally.

Some say having more or less employees doesn't necessarily mean making more or less money. I hope that isn't true.

I feel I'm doing fine but I'm tired of hearing how much money plumbers are thought to make.

Feel free to post anonymously. A range of salary is perfectly acceptable, no need to be specific.

I don't know where else to find this information.

I'm a one man show and after paying all my expenses I have a net income of 105,000 a year. Some years it has been as high as 130 and some 85,000.

Some ares are of higher pay, but also have higher cost of living. From talking to folks from DC area in the spring, they were no better than most in the area, but would live like kings in our area!!

I have a tendency to put money back into the biz at a higher rate then established companies that may be reaping the rewards from an earlier generations investment.

This country is to big with too many variables to place a number on it. I would say anywhere you can live and make 20 to 25% above the aveage income for the area you would be doing well. We all know you can make big money in NY or DC. But you can live better in an area with a little slower pace. Best Wishes J.Lockard

shows a median income of 75,000 for a plumbing contractor, 20 years experience.

You can fine tune the search for your area and other details. Although they try hard to get a $14.95 fee from you :)

You first need to crunch YOUR numbers and see what it takes to support your family and lifestyle.

If you are the only wage earner, it's getting tough to raise a family as a one man plbg/heating shop. With insurance costs, licenses, and all the other required investments....

Consider 50 weeks a year with a 35 hour per week billable hour gives you 1750 billiable hours per year. To cover a 75 K anual salary, without any benefits, you need to charge $42.00 per hour!

Add all the other cost of doing business, even at the bargin rates, like truck, tools, insurance, etc and the hourly number gets fairly big.

If you want to crunch some numbers for a business of your own try the demo "Numbers Cruncher" at www.nspgweb.com

you are right on target concerning living well elsewhere.

Twenty years ago homes in "OLD-TOWN" Alexandria were in the $200-400K range. Heard on the local news radio recently was that "starter homes" in Alexandria are $450K. I met people weekly who are purhasing houses in "Transitional" neighborhoods, and these house need to be gutted to make them livable. The house/shell goes for about 250-600 K. These are row houses. What kills me are the ones who got into this, are doing it out-of-pocket, not having correctly considered all of the costs (before furnishings of course, and cannot afford quality and cost-effective comfort systems for their homes to be.
