Boiler Schematic

so your whole system is now an open loop getting fresh oxygen all the time, expect lots and lots of rust and galvanic corrosion

better bet, is to keep the potable isolated with a flat plate heat exchanger, like the new AO-Smith ProMax SL

the buffer interface with domestic hot water IS a good idea since you will be able to purge the boilers into the hot water when the demand is met instead of venting it into the boiler room when the damper shuts

ps: you need a tekmar 262 and a 362 for this show – and use spring checks instead of gravity checks

    Boiler schematic, need your opinion

I would like to know what you guys think about using a regular indirect fired hot water heater as a buffer tank. We normally pipe these as a parallel primary loop, but we thought that we would try to use it as a primary loop buffer tank to lengthen our boiler cycling. It has a 30 gallon heating water capacity and 120 gallons of potable water capacity. We are still going to use the 120 gallons as potable water, using a mixing device. Have any of you ever done this? I've attached the boiler schematic. Let me know what you think.
    Thanks for the help.

    Couple of questions....

    (1) Why build mass when you work so hard to get rid of it?

    (2) Why are the boilers not piped with reverse return?

    (3) Are you using a 374 tekmar (2 mix temp, 2 boiler, 1 set point temp and DMW)?

    Ergomax

I would suggest an Ergomax tank as the buffer and then have the domestic water flow through it and then into the 120. The ergomax won't impact the bolier flow the way that the 120 will. Using the Ergomax you would actually have the advantage that in the summer time it would work like a air warmed buffer tank and increase the temperature of your domestic supply before it goes to the heated 120 - that is if it comes in cold like it does in the more northerly climates.

fyi 374 a lot more $ than 256+362, i have complained to them!

two mix temps might be overkill - when i need that, i go with one large secondary set by outdoor reset, and a close-t'd individual vari-speed driven zones, both taco and grunfos now makes pretty inexpensive pumps like that, with all the electronics built-in
  • I think we

are mis-reading what Kip said. He wants to use the 30 gal. HEATING WATER OUTER TANK of the TR 120 as a buffer. Not the 120 gallon stainless inner tank. That would still be isolated for potable use.
