Danfoss Valves- Worth it?

Hi-
Homoeowner with a single pipe steam system in a 3 story single family home. My third floor is really hot. How much of an effect will installing Danfoss valves on the 3rd floor radiators make? Thanks for any thoughts.

  • TRV's

They should prevent the rooms from overheating and save fuel. Where is your thermostat?

If you install them, make sure you cycle the boiler to allow the TRV's to prevent new steam from entering the radiators. Your Danfoss salesman will have an technical essay on this.

I've only felt the steam versions of TRVs (they're decades old Danfoss) in a local Catholic school and Seminary. Seems to be better regulated than other steam systems I've felt.

Ones I installed on my water system are the best thing by far I ever did for comfort. Worth every cent and zero problems into the 6th heating season.

    Thermostat...

Thanks for the response. The thermostat is on the first floor and I'm looking to have the Danfoss valves put in on the third (top) floor. The basic problem is that when the first floor is set to a reasonably comfortable level, the top floor cooks. Obviously, this is not unusual given the properties of heat. I'm just hoping that putting the new valves on the third floor radiators might be a good way to start really balancing the system.

    Just so I'm sure...

..that the TRV is being installed properly (not by me, by the way).. Am I correct that on a single pipe steam system, the TRV is installed on the venting side of the radiator, not on the supply valve?

    1 Pipe Steam

On a one pipe steam system, the Danfoss vavle is installed on the vent side of the radiator so it can control the flow of air, not on the inlet side of the radiator.

That's what I thought. Just wanted to make sure that whoever installs it is doing it right. Thanks for the help.

    A slightly bias view…

    Since I work for Danfoss.

What the 1PS Valve, Vent, and Operator will do is not allow air to exit the radiator when the room temperature is satisfied. If the air can’t exit the radiator steam can not enter the radiator. As noted in the post already, the boiler MUST cycle to allow the condensate to drain out of the radiator. Do not install TRVs in the room with the thermostat for the house.

For more info on 1PS check the library under Thermostatic Radiator Valves. Dan combined several pieces of our older literature, our part numbers have changed, but the concepts are still the same.

For more info on our current 1 PS please visit www.danfossheating.com

Should you have any further questions please feel free to email me directly.

    Warm Regards and Merry Christmas!
