Check Valve

How do I know if the check valve in my one-pipe system is good/bad?
I don't think the piping around the boiler has a full-blown Hartford
loop (acording to Dan's book).

Any thoughts?

    check valve on steam

Ugh!! The lazy man's way out! If the boiler is steaming and the water level is quite stable, and the system is working OK, chances are the check valve is OK, but the only way to know for sure is to drain the system and open up the check valve. Check the seat and the swing gate for debris and any excessive wear. Use some Never-Seize on the cover threads to ease servicing in the future.
Check valves in lieu of Hartford loops are illegal in our state, but they still seem to get installed....
