Steam newbie

sorry for the newbie question in advance but this site seems to be THE place to go to get some answers. i am new to a steam heat house and have some questions. i have read the site and have steam hissing constantly out of most of my radiator vents. i have replaced the air vents on all radiators which hasn't seemed to help. In addition, approx 5 minutes after the boiler cycles off there is a tremendous release of hissing air out of the baseboard unit closest to the boiler (before and after new air vent). I saw that Dan had written about main vents.

- what is causing the release of air?

- how do i tell if i have main vents?

- do i need main vents?

\"The Lost Art of Steam Heating\"

might be a complement to the homeowner's guide if you are interested in more detail. I'm a homeowner who just bought this book at a benefit seminar and find it both technical and easy to understand.

To add my own question - for Ken, Dan or anyone else - is the homeowner's guide worth getting? The list of features appears to have a lot of good info not in the "...Lost Art..." book.

    Thanks,
    Terry

    We Got Steam Heat

helps homeowners understand steam heat. It explains what's normal and not normal, and gives a lot of good (at least I think so) advice as to how to find and hire a proficient steam contractor, and how to tell the difference between this guy and a knucklehead. I think that's the book's greatest value. Thanks.
    Retired and loving it.

    books

As a homeowner with steam heat I bought both We Got Steam Heat and The Lost Art of Steam Heating. Plus I bought EDR (Every Darn Radiator) later. If you really want to understand your system thats the way to go.
