On a larger boiler
where you needed to use two or more outlets, and were using threaded pipe, a drop header would be easier to install.

Can you use
a drop header to give you the 24" you need from the top of the boiler? In other words, let's say you have existing mains with flange unions that are closer to the top of the boiler than 24". Can you run the header more than 24" above the top of the boiler and then drop down so you can pick up the existing mains?0 -
Yesssss!
That's one of the original reasons for a steam drop header. I haven't run into that yet though- I use them cause they're SO much easier to install.

A drop header
can give you some room to play with. Here's a link to a previous message here with a couple of pictures that may help. http://forums.invision.net/Thread.cfm?CFApp=2&Thread_ID=22090&mc=3
The other thing they do is to provide a place for some non-destructive expansion to occurr if you have a boiler with 2 take offs.0 -
Swing joint
A dropped header acts as a swing joint and gives you some wiggle room to line up your pipe work. Best Wishes J.Lockard0
