Maybe I shouldn't do any further investigating until the tech comes to look at the boiler.
I've been looking at the manual. The system came equipped with TACO 007-F5 circulating pump. I have the performance curve chart. My question is whether or not the circulator is sufficient for my system. From the boiler in the basement to the top of 2nd story radiators, there is 19-20 ft. rise. The performance curve chart for this model cuts off at 10 ft. head and is down to 3 gpm at 10 ft. I assume decreased even further considering the pipes and radiators are original to this house, which was built in 1911, so I'm sure there is enough corrosion in the lines to provide resistance.
What is the optimal rate of circulation?

The 19-20 ft. does not refer to the "head" of the pump. The head is the resistance to flow in the pipes.
What goes up , must come down. The weight of the water in one pipe offsets the water in the other, make sense? We just need to make it move, not "lift" it to the second floor.
It depends, but there may be very little corrosion in your pipes. A "closed" system has little oxygen corrosion.0 -

A pipe Thong it would thighten the pipe up jusy like a chain wrench, and could crush the pipe if you wasn't careful. Likewise, on pipe dope it depends on what you are screwing together. Frist if I'm doing steam pipe i USE A TEFLON base pipe dope doping both the outside and inside of the threads Frist 3 ob 1 1/2" and larger if it is hydronics I use premabond and if it is gas I never use Teflon on any threads because if screws up the regulators.0 -
The system wasn't always closed. On that note (corrosion) is there a gentle but effective way to unfreeze locked up valves on the radiators?0
