Look here
Check in The Library, under Steam Vapor/Vacuum Heating, for an article titled "Trane Heating Specialties for Vapor and Vacuum Systems"

Is this your vent?
It's rather unusual to find these on a one-pipe system, though I have seen this before. This vent is comparable to the Hoffman #76 vent in its venting capacity and ability to hold vacuum. They were more commonly used on several versions of Trane Vapor systems, all of which were two-pipe. This is the same Trane company known for its air-conditioning gear today.
The vacuum capability doesn't work that well on oil or gas firing, though it was great when using coal. It's best to replace these vents with non-vacuum ones, and size them to the mains they will serve. Measure the length and diameter of your steam mains and we'll tell you what you need.
If you have small children, they can use the Trane vents for weight-lifting ;-) .

Thanks Steamhead
Your posted photo is exactly what we have in our house.
There are two mains running around the perimeter of the house. One is 53 feet and carries 6 radiators the other is
44 feet and carries 4 radiators. Both the vents are situated at the very end of the mains. Also, on the longer main,
are two plugs situated at the first-third and second-third of the length of the pipe. Could it have been that these once housed air vents?
Oh, we have have six kids. I'm afraid if we gave them
these old air vents, they would eventually end up going
through a window or a wall.

Vents you need
Assuming your mains have 2-inch or 2-1/2-inch diameter pipe, install a Gorton #2 at the end of each main.
If you have trouble finding Gorton vents, go to www.gorton-valves.com to get their contact info. Talk to Ken Kunz and tell him I sent you. He will see that you get them.
The plugged tees probably used to feed radiators that have since been removed. Look for places where pipe came thru the floor to verify this. I wouldn't use these for vents- you want all your venting capacity at the end of the main, where it can vent the entire main.
