Homeowner question about piping

I want to replace the large cast iron pipes in my basement with copper to reduce the amount of water in the system and allow for some headroom. The hot water boiler is newer (w/circulator) and it's piped into an old two pipe system w/ large cast iron radiators. I also want to try to make two zones; one for the upstairs and one downstairs. Rather than install separate valves throughout the system, I thought it may be easier to basically create two loops connected to some type of zone controller. One supply line for the downstairs and one for the upstairs radiators. Can I use a common return line (one size larger) to return water from both the upstairs and downstairs rads?? Also, what kind of tees do I use? I'd love to just call a professional, but it's hard to find someone who will do this type of work.
