Supplemental Heat (PR)

My neighbor has a 415 sqft finished basement that is just to cold to let his kids play in comfortably for the long-term. I am trying to find a heating unit to accomodate.

I wonder if there is a direct vent, natural gas fired space heater that has a smaller BTU capacity. (Say, 5-8000 BTU's) Again it is a finished basement but it backs up to the mechanical room and we can run a sealed combustion vent directly outside. He currently has forced air throughout the rest of the house, so no boiler to tap off of and run additional fan coils or baseboard and the like, that is why I am leaning towards a forced air supplement. (He also said that if he runs the fan constant, the 2nd floor gets cold, but the main level stays nice.)

Any products you have tried and likeddisliked? The rest of the house is getting adequate heat so furnace size is not really in question to my knowledge.

I told him to call the gas co and see if they could make a recommendation on an "Energy-Star" appliance that fits the bill.

Anyone run a small heat exchanger and small fan-coil off of a water heater. This is not a typical issue I deal with but I am looking for other ideas that might be eluding me.

Regards,

PR

  • Paul I do not have

the literature here in the office it is at my center, but I believe Rinnai has a unit like you are looking for. If Jack Frederick is around he may pick up on this post and he is the local rep on those units. You can reach him at j.frederick@fredger.com.

I will see if I have the literature tomorrow and get back to you.

    Great Timmie

I am a Rinnai distributor on the water heater side, hopefully they can point me in the right direction with something I may already have access to on the wholesale distribution side.

Couldn't help but post this picture of you from Boston. Was that light beer you were drinking? (I was sitting next to Gary Wallace)

O'Dools for both of us. I stuck some real good stuff in that cazoo before I handed it over to Tim. Notice how focused Timmy is at this moment.

What a time was had by all. A pleasure to learn about what you do Paul:-)

Smell at the back of the bus

    I thought I was on a field trip :)

Paul, Timmie got to you first. Rinnia would have been my suggestion also. Perfect for your application.

  • Paul the two

I came up with are the RCE 229 A or the RCE 329 A those are vent free units but very good applications although I am not a big fan of vent free.

The vented units are the RHFE 263 FA.

I have some brochures if you want I can mail them to you if you give me your postal mailing address.

    Thanks Tim

Paul, I missed you at ISH. I had those diagrams you sent me and I needed a traslator. Sorry we missed. I may be in Lincoln in March on personal stuff.

The Rinnai Energysaver is just a fantastic product. I've represented them in NE (That's New England Paul, not Nebraska)since 91. There are vent extensions which allow venting out of a basement. For 450 sq ft I'd go with the 431. There are two models the 431 FA III. On/off, up/down. and the 431WTA, programmable set-back. The WTA is excellent.

As a H2O dist I would strongly recommend that you try the heating side also. I'm at 617 834-8751

    air movement

cut in a 6" return from the furnace to a low sidewall grille and cut in two 6" supply diffusers. 2 hrs max. $25- $50 mat.

Steve L \more info to sort through to make an educated decision.

Modine makes a direct vent nat gas fired unit, here is the link to it. You do not have to search far to see what price points are on the Internet.

    http://hot-dawg.modine.com/unleash.php?expand_index=0

Also, there is a PDF file attached for the Modine units as well as the Installation and Operation Manual (IOM) for the Rinnai unit that was recommended. I do not have information on pricing on the Rinnai at this time.

At least you will be able to see the equipment, how it differs from what you have already seen, and start to gauge price points.

I believe even the smallest Modine Hot Dawg unit will be a lot more heater than you need but the price point might be lower. The Rinnai might be a little spendier but closer to matching the BTU load of your basement. Either way, I know venting to the exterior will not be difficult.
Let me know if I can help further.

    PR
