When My one-pipe system is running, the drip connections/wet returns connect to the
end of the mains get hot. Is this normal?

Yes
Any steam that condenses in the mains will still be relatively hot, and will heat the drip to the wet return.
Plus, although most of the steam will head for the main vent, a bit willl carry-over into the the drip.
Finally, the drip will also gain some heat by conduction from the heated main.
How is the overall system performance?0 -
It's old but working pretty well. There is some bouncing
in the sight glass and I think the water has some oil on it. I've been working to get it in better balance by replacing all the radiator vents as well as the mains.
Though the balance is much better, there is still
some uneven heating.

So...
no hissing, banging, things that go bump in the night?
Are the mains insulated?0 -
The system is almost silent. No Banging or hissing. The gas
meter makes more noise than anything. And the pipes are
insulated.

Sweet!
I love it when these old systems work like they're supposed to!
Have a great holiday season!0
