Pipe Dope/Thread Seal For Steam

I have the 6" nipples and new Gorton main vents, and I am planning to install them ASAP.

The one question I have left is what thread seal is good on a steam main since the operating temperature is going to be fairly high? I'm guessing something from the teflon family.

I have a tube of Rectorseal T Plus 2, but it's operating temperature is -40°F to 125°F.

The rookie questions just keep coming! If there's a FAQ for dummies I should be looking at instead of pestering you guys, please let me know. Thanks!

I like Rectorseal #5 and lamp Wick

That's the yellow one. Rectorseal 2 is fine as well, but I use either wick and dope or teflon tape and dope - best assurance of no leaks, Mad dog

    da dope

nothin' but good ole' john crane (pls2) for me. shame they took the lead out though, it was allways great to toss a pint to someone not expecting it to weigh eight pounds.

    Teflon Tape

I'am a die hard pipe dope -lamp wick (quick wick) guy. For steam don't use a oil base dope. For a vent I would use teflon tape, this I feel is one place for tape. Stay off the first threads with the tape. You don't want to get some of the teflon hair up in the vent.....

    dope

my #1 choice for steam is Yellow gas tape and masters metallic dope as its good for 600 degrees. another good one is permatex's pipe sealing cord although I dont belive it is appoved yet.
