Baseray Question

I have a section of Burnham Baseray Cast Iron Baseboard that was originally installed in 1961. Due to renovations,
the length needs to be shortened. What is the best way to separate the sections? I have found a local source for the push nipples and the assembly tool. Will the old sections be reusable with new push nipples? What sealer or lubricant should be used? Can this be done sucsessfully?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Baseray
After removing the baseboard and laying it flat on the floor, remove the bolts and nuts securing the sections together. While applying weight on the sections you want to retain intact, tap the section you wish to remove with a block of wood or wooden wedges. The sections should come apart fairly easily. Remove the old nipples with channelock pliers be gradually rocking them to loosen them.
Clean up the nipple ports of the sections you are reconnecting to remove rust and possible scratches from the old nipples. Use Loctite #592 sealant (or teflon type pipe compound) to lube the new nipples and set them in one of the sections being reassembled. Tap them in a little so that they are in square. Apply lubricant to set nipples and other section and draw sections together with compound leverage tool. Reconnect the securing bolts and nuts and rehang baseboard while making sure that all sections remain aligned. Hope this helps.
