A generalization, which I partly agree with...
In my experience, I've found it to be more likely that an affluent person will cry poor, than a truly poor person to put on an illusion that they're well off.
That said, I'm sure there is a significant amount of people out there who are not necessarily poor, but, thanks to the proliferance of credit, put themselves in deep debt in order to present an image that they're wealthier than their true income.0 -

Conservation of Capital
Most rich people got that way because they have scrimped, saved, and planned for as long as they can remember, and it worked for them. They're not about to change the methods that got them there.
The vast majority of those that are financially well off usually achieve it much later in life than what the media hype and b.s. would have us believe. It takes more than a lottery ticket, big dreams and luck to "strike it rich". It requires hard work, perserverance, and an ability to always keep your 'eyes on the prize', if that is really what you're seeking.
Watch the pennies and the dollars add up.
The poor, however defined, have been programmed by TV and our society to believe that the only measure of success is based on the amount of material items they can acquire. I have met many a so-called rich person that brags about what they have. Invariably they are selfish, self-centered, arrogant and obnoxious, and think they are better than everyone else, because they have more "stuff". Yet their personal and family lives are empty and devoid of any substance or meaning.
To me they are still poor, and they have no sense of self-esteem, or what it means to be a caring, generous, family oriented person. The best things in life really are free.
And the really truly poor among us in this country suffer even more based on the thoughts and actions of these misguided idiots.
Take care of each other, it's a small world, and a short life...

That's the myth
Mark,
{climbing onto my soapbox....}
More people are born into money that make it themselves. They often have none of the effort principles you mention. As best as I can tell, the mindset is "It's their money, they deserve it and you don't."
I also live around a whole bunch of people in the silicon valley who made tons of money in the .com days and kept a whole lot of it. They also often don't have much of the principles you mention. Some do, most don't. Some are philanthropic, most aren't... One guy wants to build a 25,000 sqft. house, but he says it's only 17,000... I can't change him but it sure seems like there are better things to do with that money.
