Water rads hammer? -Homeowner

My rads occasionally hammer or clang. It sounds almost like they are hopping. They are huge cast iron water rads from 1890's. Is this harmful? Is it air, or is it temp differential. I really think its just temp diff because that is when it seems to happen. Any input would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

Getting Hammered.....
If this is a forced water job then maybe the temperature (aquastat) is set too high. If the temp reaches its flash point this might be the sound your hearing. Drop the temp down to 180 or less and see if this cures it....Robert O'Connor/NJ0 -
Thanks!
But I don't beleive there is an aquastat. The Honeywell programmable thermo in the living room controls it. There is no outside reset either. The noise is definately happening when they are stone cold and the thermostat kicks in or when they are cooling off. The holes the pipes come through are also plenty large.0 -
.
get an outdoor reset control and you'll be all set or--call a service guy and find out what the operating temperature is --verify it and adjust as needed then ask him prices for an outdoor reset control ---0
