The old boiler cracked the day after thankgivings we mananged to get the boiler and fittings on saturday and worked like dogs all weekend and monday and tuesday got it going there where only 2 of us and i worked alone on it 2 of the days .I had to cut back the welded rised and re thread them in place by hand no ridgid 700 on hand .I didn't have to many options on the header piping so i did a drop header with all 4" and had no choice but to take the riser off the center but it work quite well and i had recently saw a drop header with take off on the center on a unit installed in about 1915 and it ran well,so i gave it a try and i did tell the ho what was up .The old boiler was done a little over 20 years ago and it was always flooding wondering why well to make a long story short next week i'm installing a false water line and the rest of the system needs some vacume line removed and vents installed the last change out and up date the vacume lines where not totally removed so the system needs some main vents and a bunch of rads vents on the convectors and room radators thanks for any comments peace clammy

    The new boiler

Here's a coulpe of shot of the new boiler it 's a weil mclean 6 section 80 series firing 5.50 max if i had the time we would have did a solid block platform but they would have been without heat 1 day longer and it was getting cold in there .All the mains and riser are dripped into the wet returns but there hasn't been loop seals on them for 20 years some staem distrubtion is quite poor with a false water line and some maiin and rad vents she should be in better shape and i'm hoping to sneak in a vaporstat instead of thoses pa404 pressuretrolls .They did have a bishop babcock selector switch and vacume tank and pump but it's long since dis connected thanks and peace

    thanks

Thank you sir even though the old header was not insulated nor the welded pipe connected to the origanal we insulated it all with r 4.5 duct wrap it,s cheaper and works just as well and long radius welded ells area breze it made a huge difference in the boiler room as she steamed it was like being on the surface of the sun thanks again to all who's advise always inspires me to do the best and realize that some times doing the right thing take a little long but not quite as long as doing it twice peace clammy

That is a feast for the eyes...

I love the 45° angle + union combination. Hopefully, if this boiler ever has to be taken out, it won't be as much of a pain to deal with than the welded predecessor.

Boy, your arms must have hurt after not only threading all that pipe but assembling it too! I know that I would have been left panting next to the boiler long before you were done!

Your "control panel" is also a nice touch. It gives anyone a comfortable way to assess the condition of the boiler and to address its controls.

In fact, I'm amazed the old boiler worked at all considering how rusty the broken cracks are. It looks like it has been suffering from a breach in the HX for a while.

Lastly, interesting basement. Considering the size of the boiler, is it for a University or the like? And just what are those folks growing in the background? ;-)

    not to be...

a wise acre..but shouldn't the take offs come after both of the supply and not in between them? Very neat work, nice drop header and it sure beats the welded set up they had...kpc

    yes kevin

Yes kevin but we where trying to get the heat going and pouring a new pad and cutting back everything to the threaded stuff would have added days if not a coulpe of more grand to the job and in any event it was a channce to copy 1 or 2 steam system that i personally have seen and serviced which where piped with drop headers with take off of thr center and worked great with no ill effect being that they where running that way from day one and that was in the year 1915 so sometimes you have to take a chance .And as things where this was a in a hurry job so re locating the boiler up more and re piping would have been not only a hard sale but a much bigger load on my shoulders to finish quickly thanks for your thoughts peace clammy

    \"supplemental heat\"

Could have turned on a couple of those extra lights and kept that place warm.

    Looks good

with those tall risers to the drop header you shouldn't be carrying over any water to cause problems with the placement of the steam main takeoffs. That's probably why the job works so well.

Save the Bishop-Babcock equipment for the heating museum.

  • Good job Clammy

I understand what you're saying , being under the gun and wanting to get the heat going as fast as you can . You did some fine work - in a rush to boot !

The fact is that when you walked in, the people were without heat. When you walked out they weren't.

Like Kevin said, sometimes you have to do what you have to do. They can't all be photo ops, though you guys did a fine job.

I bet it runs quieter than the other one did.

I'm sending a high five your way. Mission accomplished!

    Best wishes!

    practical vs. pretty

seems like a shame to hide that beautiful pipework with that ugly tinfoil.

    I agree

Beautiful under the gun piping. I'd be proud of that workmanship and dedication. The tin foil just doesn't do it justice though.
