Semi-Emergency

Hi All-
Homeowner with 1907 Single pipe system. I just replaced some of my old vents (not all, but 3) with Hoffman 1A. I also repacked a supply valve that was leaking. The vents are running much quieter and the valve has stopped leaking.

BUT NOW...

There's water leaking from the ceiling above the heater where I repacked the valve. It's cold water dripping fairly steady. There is a radiator on the floor directly above where the leak is, but that seems to be fine. Besides that, the water that's dripping is cold.

Any thoughts? Is it just condensate dripping? I imagine that repacking the valve would cause the system to behave differently, but is this sort of leak a possibility.

Not sure what to do.

Thanks,
Paul

    Educated guess

There's probably a leak in the steam pipe up there. You've stopped several leaks already, so that one is now worse.

I hate to tell you this but you'll probably have to open the ceiling to fix it. You might want to try the Find a Professional page of this site to locate someone who can handle the repair.

Well, if it keeps leaking, the ceiling might come down for me. So you think it's possible that fixing some problems would cause another one to become evisent? I guess that makes sense. Anyway, thanks for the the tip.

    Would shutting off...

Would Shutting off the radiator that is served by the pipe that appears to be leaking help at all? It's in a room that doesn't get much use.

    would guess

If your chasing leak's your going to keep chasing. I personally think your better off getting it fixed now and finding and fixing all your leak's....But that's just my opinion..:)
