I installed a new low mass boiler primary secondary piping, the secondary piping is connected to a staple up system set a 150 degrees. When the system calls and piping expands the ticking noise is driving the home owner crazy
What do I do ?

    Is this

installed with transfer plates? Can you still get under to see what is causing the noise?

Keeping the temperature as low as possible to the tube, possibly an outdoor reset control, to minimize the temperature swings in the supply water.

Still be best to handle the noise at the point of the problem, if possible. Controlling the temperature swings better is an after the fact fix, but could provide additional comfort and maybe fuel savings.

    my thoughts?

Drop the temp to 100 degrees, control the zones with constant circulation, the thing with staple ups to me is your not wanting to shut the pump off and on just ramp it up and down...even doing that doesnt eliminate all the clicks and squeaks and cricks...if theres no control over the water temps then a bypass will at least allow some sorta relife....i am stuck right now as my van wouldnt start now ia have to go get rental car ,haul my van some place to get new starter ,hope i havent trashed the ring gear...does it get any better? Sure...i need to be there yesterday so the sheet rockers can Finish wow wee it is fun. every one needs our job :))) i guess im sniviling....:) some people probably would want this much experience:))))

    Tekmar

You can also use a Tekmar control that has the softstart feature such as the 362 but you would probably have to modify the piping for variable speed mixing.

  • if you are already primary secondary, popping in a variable speed injection pump and controller should be fairly easy and would help a lot.

However, if you have really long straight runs in the joists and your penetrations aren't large enough, not even that may stop the noise. What's the longest length from joist penetration to loop bend? what size joist penetrations?
