Choice of oil burners for Buderus?

I am looking at a Buderus 215/3 boiler (w a R2107 Logamatic) that will be utilized with a Tjernlund Sideshot power venter. I have a choice of a Riello 40 F-5, a Carlin EZ-1HP, and a Beckett AFG as a burner. Aside from a local serviceman's preference, is there a best choice among the three? Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

    Buy the serviceman's preference, if

you don't, it amounts to buying a Ford from a Chevy dealer.

    Ask the installer....

I would pick his preference but if they've used all of them, ask to visit the sites and listen for yourself.

I love Riello burners but have found them to be a bit noisy in certain situations. They tend to be quiet in the immediate vicinity of the boiler/boilerroom, but can sound like a train from the living room that has a flue next to the fireplace flue.

If you have the room, ask about the direct vent models.(not sure if it's available with the 215 yet). Power venters are just another thing that can go wrong. If the DV is available and applicable, I would use it.

I was at the Buderus facility a while back, and they have a 215 set up with a Beckett burner, with a large cover in place. I had to put my hand on it to see if it was running. They were using an all fuel chimney for this unit.

This is just my observations....so far. I also like the CCT burners in thes units. They are quiet and as dependable as all others. Do yourself a favor, and don't guess. Ask to listen to all and make your own decision. Chris

    Chris

was that a Beckett NX that you felt was quiet? I saw one of these in a direct vent Biasi and it was very quiet,

    Robert,

No, I don't think it was. It was at the Open House last fall. They may have been testing it at the time, but noone there said anything about it. Chris

    Noise

seems to be a major concern in the oil market. I wonder who will solve it in a chimney application.

Re: Last years Brookhaven Meeting of the mindless,

I think that issue was spoken about as much, if not more, than all the neat things we saw at the lab.

Like I said, if the equipment could match the outputs needed, that Herrmann burner would be the bomb!

As a small aside...The building I'm living in is being switched to a boiler for every unit. The smallest available unit is in the 60,000 range. My apartment comes in at a whopping 38,000 (using the EDR rating of the radiation) and with the improvements in the insulation and new windows comes in somewhere around 26-27000 MAX. . Where do I find the right size boiler at an appropriate price for this load? The owner couldn't find it either and is stuck with what is available. Price IS driving this market dammit!

Hey manufacturers, make us something that can fire well at lower, needed rates. If you do, you'll find a whole new market in the condo and apartment business field. Chris

    Hey, you guys

really need to read Alan's postings on OTT, he's working on it right now. I'd love to see that thing go longer, maybe put a tech forum in it.

    Either modulate, or suffer.

A 5-1 modulating Munchkin (T50) would do OK, no? Even though a minimum firing rate of 10kBTU is more than you probably need for most of the season, the amount of "oversizing" is kept somewhat in check by the modulation feature of the Munchkin.

Otherwise, you're stuck with a range of tankless waterheaters like the Takagi, Rinnai, et. al. Perhaps you can gray-import that condensing gas water heater the Japanese have in their market?

I'd like to see a mini boiler ....

weighing in at 120 lbs with a mini two stage burner and a stack option off the top ,out the back ,or off the top sides.a low water c o on the only supply port ,shipped sans recirc.with all taps Tapered thread, with no loose "hiding" plugs or "unapproachable tappings ... stainless steel pins with stainless flat washers and yellow brass nuts to retain the burner...oh and shipped with a draw band so everyone has time to familiarize themselves with it:) Who knows maybe service guys will like working on them:)

    Basically Weezbo it's here,

it's an aluminum block boiler with a Riello F-5/2, problem is you can buy it in Europe and the Orient, not here. But, my gremlins tell me soon.

BTW, the boiler is at Brookhaven and I've had a 5M/2 since 1985, so..............soon! At least I hope so for this industry's sake.

BTW2, US burner manufacturers could crank one of these out pretty quickly, IMO, if they jumped on it and used the B2TA pump from Suntec and a mini-mod motor from Seimans, Belimo and others.

This is a huge market (under .60 gph) and it's all gone to gas and electric for far too long, in addition the 138 gallon tank is here, so wake up people!!!!!
