Minimum distance between Tee and...........

Brad,

Simple answer is 18"

Straight pipe before a air scoop - 18"
Straight Pipe before a Spirovent, they always work good, with 18" they work better.

Min distance from a elbow and a pair of secondary tees, 18"
Min distance after a pump before an elbow, matters little.
Min distance of metal pipe out of a boiler before pex 18"
Min distance of straight pipe before a barometric damper 18"

See a trend?

    Minimum space, plumbing.

Thanks guys. In doing a little more reading, it seems I was concerned about the wrong thing (having supply and return tees too close). What do you suggest for minimum distance from a tee or elbow, 'before and after' a pump? What do you think about pump flanges with the built in shut-off. How much straight pipe do you recommend before and after a spirovent? Thanks, Brad
  • 18\"?

If that were true; that means all those beautifull pre manufactured panels we use are not technically correct. Danfoss, Wirsbo, Kitec and Watts to name just a few.

RE: flanges with the built in shut-off. Best thing for service I've seen in a while. I use them every time.

I think a lot has to do

with how fast the flow is inside that pipe. Consider... a scoop type air purger is just a wiiiiddddeeee spot in the road. Intended to slow velocity, and some brands have a ramp or scoop cast inside to encourage air up to the vent.

Ideally 18" but I have installed them as close as 6". Run the 15-58 Grundfos on slow speed to purge :)

I've found Spiro vents really are not as bothered by the piping distance. The method of removal with the micro bubble resorbers is very efficient.

Witness the clear pipe Spiro Vent demo some time, at a trade show, to see just how well they work.

Still, I use iron scoops when the application is right.

Or the moon is in skipio.

I've found P/S piping often benefits from two or more purgers. A plain, inexpensive cast iron scoop in the boiler loop, and a micro bubble Spiro in the secondary/ radiant loops.

Just one expansion tank location however :)

I've got a bunch of water heater installs with just a float air vent at the top of the tank. That large domed up section of the tank is an excellent air scoop! A little float type vent is all you need.
