    Taco VRTX100 & VRTX125

Has anyone installed either of these air separators? I like the specifications and it is made to hang a 1/2" expansion tank. More information is here:

    I have used...

one or two. I am not wild about the contruction (steel body)and the float cruds up...I would use the spirovent it costs about the same and has a longer warrantee..I am going to look into the B&G air seperator as Ron has been starting to use. Just my 2c...kpc

  • I've seen a few of the Taco Vortec

on a job here and there and they look like a nice piece of equipment . I also like the fact that you can change the 3/4 inch air eliminator on top , if it goes bad . Our plumbing supply doesn't carry the Vortec , they stock the B+G EAS . I think they're both very close in price , with the Spirovent about 15-20 bucks more .

    Cast Iron Body and Cap

I downloaded the tech data from Taco and it is listed as having a cast iron body and cap and a stainless steel cartridge and plate. It is described as using "a tangential design to create a chamber of swirling water and air in which a low pressure area forms in the center." I have to think that it is better than the old Taco cast iron air scoop. I am a firm believer in the heavier the better and if it is made of cast iron I have to think it will work.

    Taco Vortech

Attached is the catalog for the Taco, Vortech with the replaceable integral Taco Hy-vent. This is a quality Cast Iron product that will purge the entrained air out of solution by the swirling effect, created by the tangential design, where a low pressure is created internally.

    Taco Vortech vs. Spirovent Jr.

We use both. The Vortech is beefier and a wonderful product with the Taco cleanable auto air vent a big plus, however... We have found that IF you thread a copper male adapter right into it( as opposed to a black nipple and dielectric unions) there is a tendency to develop leakage in glycol filled systems. Some manufacturers male adapters are more prone than others, but after 3 leaks we called it quits.

The Spirovent Jr. has never leaked on us and both offer a 1/2" tapping off the bottom for the expansion tank. The Spirovent Jr. weighs less, but I think they both will hold up equivalently.

    Vortech

The Vortech uses ,what at first look, appears to be a standard float type air vent. It is in fact a 3/4" M.I.P float vent, not the standard 1/8" vent. So if you are many miles from the closest supply house, you are going to have to use a 3/4" nipple with a 3/4" X 1/8" reducing coupling to convert it. Make no mistake you will destroy the original vent if it has to come out. The Vortech has that high lip that goes around the float vent We have never had a single problem with any of our Spirovents out there. We use a Spirovent on every install and have hundreds out there. Hope this helps.

P.S. We have started using the B&G EAS also. We get a better price on it and you can screw the cap down during initial fill and purges.

    Vortech Believer

Have been using the Taco Vortech air seperator for a couple of years now. Taco, spirovent, B&G whatever. The 100 bucks vs the 15 dollar "scoop" makes a big difference. They're cleanable, they hiss like a mad snake, and you don't need the manditory 18 inch straight approaching the "scoop". If you follow Dan's piping diagrams (plug, plug) these devices works very well!

    Read the instructions, too!
