dumb question....knocking....

I have a question that I am sure is really dumb but I don't know anything about heating systems.

I live in an apartment in NYC and I don't even know what kind of heat it is. I know we pay for it out of our electric bill. The radiators run along the floor on the exterior walls of the apartment. We have our own thermostat in our apartment but no access to any type of boiler, etc.

The knocking in my bedroom at night is driving me crazy. I have read on a few sites that one should drain the steam/water out of the pipes....can I do this with my type of radiator? Do I need to ask my landlord to do anything with the boiler system? Or is there anything else you would suggest for me to solve the problem?

Thanks for any suggestions you can provide!
Jen
