how fast do you want to melt. ASHRAE has redefined the melt categories, thanks to Robert Rean and others. It helps define the melt times and amounts bettter now.

RPA also has a guideline.

Personally I don't like to see any under 100 BTUs per square foot. Owners are usually very dis satisfied with weak, slow systems.

When you start considering 10 bucks a square foot or more to install one, jumping up some pump and boiler capacity doesn't add a huge amount.

It a rich mans sport to begin with. Personal safety issues aside, of course.

If you are in a position that you REALLY need to burn energy heating the great outdoors, may as well design for performance.

    How many BTU'S/sqft do you guys design your snowmelt for?

    In western NY

    We design at 150 BTUs/ sq. Ft. I have not had complaints. Been designing that way for many years. In Buffalo we tend to get some lake effect snow dumps.
