Checked an EGH 125 steamer today and had about a 500F stack temp above what I believe to be between the sections and about 450F above the sections. Sounds a bit high. Whats normal for this boiler?

That does sound high
I've seen gross stack temps in the high 300s on these boilers. It may be overfired, draft too high, sooted up, etc.

I'm thinking limed up
This is the boiler in the system we'e been talking about. The condensate pump has been leaking for at least 3 or 4 years, taking in a fair amount of our wonderful hard water. The boiler was firing at the proper rate at one time and I don't see any soot. Not sure how to change draft on a draft hood equipped boiler.
I will pass along the info to the owner and see what he wants to do. Sounds like some deliming needs to be done. Any recomendations?

high temp
The temp may be a little high. Check the gas pressure in the manifold 3" water collum for nat. gas 10.5" for LP
then if metered clock the meter to verify input. Check against the boiler ration plate.
Your fuel supplier can assist with clocking meter inputs.
finally Contact Weil-McLain through your local distributor they will be happy to assist you with this technical question. I have fount ther response to be excellent over the last 40 years0 -
The temp on that
boiler should be 350 to 400 before the draft hood. How far from the boiler is the draft hood? What is the temperature after the draft hood? Did you check draft before and after the draft hood? It may be possible that the sections are partially blocked. I would also do a combustion analysis and see what your readings are.0 -
Other info
The draft hood is built in low profile (see WM wibsite)and I took the readings directly above the cast iron heat exchanger. Draft at this position was reading .01 on my analyzer. I did not make notes of the combustion analysis but I believe CO was reading about 40ppm.
Do you have your new publication out yet on how to use combustion analyzers? I need to do some learnin'!
