Burnham replaces an American Standard
in Long Beach - a world of it's own in Nassau County . The floor to joist height was 6 foot . We banged out heads alot on everything that was in the way .
Work in this area is supposedly strictly enforced . I wonder how the water heaters passed any inspection being that close to the oil tank . I made sure the new boiler was the required 5 feet away .

Burnham V83 and Beckett oil burner
That's Kenny doing a little soft shoe for the camera . I'm really liking the B and G air separator . I wish the expansion tank port was 3/4 inch though - more sturdy if the tank waterlogs . We also had some IFCs , really needed for the minimal height in the basement .0 -
its a good thing
He does boilers for a living!! How do you guys ever do any service calls with all the boilers you put in? Nice job and I now have a headache seeing that short ceiling..:(
P.S. Thought I would let you know a four day weekend is a beautiful thing!!!!0 -
well done ...
wow TWO water heaters. Whats with that? Wasthat old boiler pumping from the supply side of the boiler? How did they cram 3 flue pipes into that 1 chimney entrance? Is that backflow prventer an Watts #7? As to the 1/2" port...have you ever thought about piping the extrol away from the boiler and hanging it on a drop ear 90? I mean with all the room you have to work with it should be a cinch... LOL. kpc

Nice Work as Always!
... just wish they'd let you put those water heaters to rest by replacing them with a nice IDWH or two, but I digress... the electrical and piping work is about the neatest thing this basement has ever seen (and probably will ever as well).
Should be an interesting shuffle if that oil tank ever lets go and has to be replaced!0 -
The 2 heaters
are to separate the gas bills between the homeowner and tenant . I'm not sure how they work out the heating bill though . Yep , this is a rarity on an old system - pumps on the supply . The expansion tank was in the return . I wonder how that affects pumping from the PONPC ? I didn't take a good look at the gas heater fluepipe , but they did join the 2 - 3 inch pipes into a 4 inch tee . I think the backflow is made by Combraco ? I'll check tomorrow . OK , what's a drop ear 90 ? Thanks alot Kevin for the kind words .0 -
Nice work, as always
Was that an old American-Standard A-series boiler?

Yeah , Kenny's a real comedian
I couldn't stop laughing when he ran his head into a valve - sans the handle . No permanent damage though . Unless you call hurting your pride permanent .
Nope , we don't do service , they keep them separate from us installers . I like it this way . Have a great time on you 4 day weekend , and thanks Lchmb .0 -
The oil tank
looks like it's on borrowed time . I think the tank can be pulled out of there , but it ain't gonna be fun . I'm glad it won't be me doing it ( I hope ) . Thank you Constantin for your comments .0 -
Actually
I'm suprised I remembered it was an American Standard . I very rarely look at the name tag on the old beasts . All I know is it was HEAVY . And way too big for one of these " summer homes " that people live in year round . Thanks alot Steamhead .0 -

must be nice
Just doing install's..........ok done dreaming! I get both side's of it. Usually work on an install and get a call around 5 pm for 2 or 3 service calls..:( Hey if I send you a bucket of 1/2" ips ball valves will you put them on your expansion tanks? I would bet your service dept would like you. Specially at 2 in the morning when the tank goes sour...
oh yea I think a drop ear 90 is a black iron 90 with two screw holes built on the top of it...but up hea we doesnt' see all that fancy quipment..:) LOL0 -
If the expansion tank has to be replaced
you only have to drain 1-2 gallons of water out. What's the big deal?

at 2 am
I do a large voluum of service call's...One of the big issues we run into are expansion tank's that are 20 years old and gone. Alot are located directly over electrical system's which when your eye's are half closed at 2 am it alway's make it fun. I for one like to find a shut off in place and it's a cheap easy switch when its there. Besides I am a huge believer in the more shutoffs the better!!!0 -
Ron...
A drop ear 90 is a c x FM 90 with ears to munt onto a stud...commonly used for shower heads..kpc

A Basement in Long Beach!
As a PE, I inspect quite a few houses on the South Shore. A basement in Long Beach is not so common. I suppose a dry basement is even more unusal.
I am interested in a quote for a steam boiler replacement (American Standard A-3) in Far Rockaway.0 -
nice work
I know how hard it is to work in low basements. One question...... You say you only install? I noticed the old boiler might have been installed by someone who had to clean it..... The smokepipe looked like a pain to clean but the clean out was easy to get to........ The new boiler looks like you have to squeeze in between the water heater and the boiler. This makes it harder to clean.........I know hindsite is 100% and maybe you have a good reason to install it this way(can't see the whole basement) but when Installing can you please think of us guys in service and cleaning dept. The boiler could be this way for over 30 years and the easyer it is to clean the longer it will last. The burnham is almost the same design as that old american standard (for cleanouts I mean) ... it lokks like it would fit the same way........... just my 2 cents.....0
