Secret Santa - Ho, Ho, Ho

Got my list & I checked it twice - can't be naughty, so he must be a nice 9-year old & he's getting exactly what he wanted.

For you secret santas, shop early - the gift requested in mine is one that's already sold out in many areas of the country. That had me sweating bullets! But, it's now in hand & will be sent to my contact with NYC.

Feels good to be Santa again!

    You never stand so tall

as when you stoop to help a child.

    Thanks, pal.

    Just opened mine

and it feels like Christmas already.
    Dear Santa,
I would like a new Ultra boiler and the complete set of Dan Holohan's books.

Hey, wait a minute. The fix is in!
I'm actually looking forward to shopping for their gift this weekend. Amazing how so little means so much to a child.

    I thought only Santa

knows the children's names and what they want....... HEY! Wait a minute, I think I'm on to something(G).

Remember the St. Elsewhere episode when the old guy kept saying he was Santa & they passed him off as a nut - until he began reciting their childhood wishes and what they got for X-mas?

Tis the season to be jolly!

Got mine yesterday and it started a trend with all my guys!

Got mine in the mail, little 6 year old girl....Put an envelope on the wall and everyone that walked into the shop heard about what we were doing. The response was so overwhelming we had everything the girl wanted ordered on Amazon and in the mail within two hours! My secretary called NY Cares and asked her to send us out a couple of more letters! Today, one of my helpers, who does not make much and has a whole boatload of financial problems, handed me twenty bucks out of his paycheck. I gave him a dollar an hour raise on the spot! The gift that this project has given me is even greater than the gifts that the children are getting!

    I took those two

to the Barnes & Noble in Union Square today, along with seven other kids from the shelter. We had 11 volunteers from New York Cares with us as well. Someone had donated $200 in B&N gift cards and we used it for a shopping trip. Each kid got to pick out something for $20. I wish you could have seen their faces. Such a little thing to us, but incredible to these kids. Twenty bucks!

Afterwards, we went back to the shelter for pizza and juice and we read some more. Then we did a project that I had found though Oriental Trading. It was the Tree of Thanks, little foam trees with foam leaves. The kid writes on the leaves things that he or she is thankful for and then pastes it to the tree. You know what most of them wrote? I'm thankful for my life, God, my food, a place to live, my family, my friends, books.

    Not a bad list, eh?

    Bless you for caring. Thanks.

    such simple requests

A yo-yo. Can you believe it? A yo-yo. My wife thinks I went overboard but I bought a bunch (Duncans too!)along with the other stuff. Dan, do you think its o.k if we happen to put extra stuff in for Daisy when we send out our package? In other words, along with all the requested items, may we send extra? My 11 year old daughter went on a spree of sorts. She cried when reality set in that there are WAY less fortunate people in the world. The hand written request on a makeshift stocking got to her(as it did all of us). I nearly joined her. She felt that the list was way too short and picked out some things that she thought a six year old would want. Since we've never taken part in this program, we dont want to overstep our boundaries. On a side note Dan, thank you for involving my wife and I( and my daughter Jackie) in this program. Its a great feeling. Thanks for all that YOU do. You are the real meaning of the word role model. I know I look up to you with the highest regard.

    Please.

be Santa as much as you'd like, Tommy. Bless you.

My daugher, Meghan, was walking with Eli to Barnes & Nobles yesterday on our field trip. Eli is a 10-year-old, and a regular in our reading program. He is such a smart kid, and so gentle. He was talking about the book, The Polar Express, which I had read to him again last month. It's his favorite book and it's always the first book he goes for when we get to the library. He told Meghan that he doesn't think he should believe in Santa anymore because he's been writing to Santa for his whole life and he has never gotten a single Chistmas present. Meg told him that he'd be hearing from Santa for sure this year.

Thanks to you and your family for bringing magic into a child's life, Tommy.

Dan, Toni and I are heading out shortly to get Christian his gifts. Toni would like to know if Meghan has any letters left so she could have a child of her own to bring some Christmas to!

We definitely still have some letters!

Yes, Alan, we definitely still have some letters. I can send you another one this week. Thanks so much for being so great!

The program is going really well this year. We've already given out about 15,000 letters, so we're hoping to have all of the letters out right after Thanksgiving. I'm glad you're all having so much fun shopping for the kids! I love working on this program, and I'm so glad that you're all a part of it.

On a different note, thanks again to everyone who supported me in my World Teach fundraising efforts. I just found out that I'm leaving here on January 5th, so I'll write to all of you soon after I arrive. I am still waiting to hear about my placement in the country, but I'll keep you posted. Thanks again for all of your support!! It really means a lot to me.
