Stuck Radiator Valves

Most of my radiator valves are stuck and will not turn. I did disconnect one radiator for some remodeling but could not get the valve off the 1.5" pipe so I could take it apart. Is there anything I can do to get the valves free? It is a hot-water system.

Thanks

Mark

  • Radiator Valve

It's probably very old and needs to be re-built although it's much easier to buy a new valve (if you can get it off).

If it were me, I'd get a couple of guys on it; one to back-up the pipe with a pipe wrench and the other to de-thread the valve. You probably need some cheaters on the pipe wrenches to extend the handles and get some leverage.

Be careful though: if your wrench slips off, you can seriously hurt yourself.

    Stuck valve

Stuck radiator valves are easy to remove with a hammer and a sharp chisel (with practice). remove the radiator and take a chisel and place it on the high point of the flats used to put the valve on. strike downward towards the floor and it will usually break off in a v shape. the valve should spin off quite easily. to remove the spud chisel around the thread where it meets the radiator enough to dent the spud without going through the brass. and if necessary the union nut can be chiseled off by placing it against the radiator and striking it towards the radiator. Just remember to strike downward when removing the valve so you don't damage the threads on the nipple coming out of the floor.
