where do you take the combustion readings from? do you drill and tap/plug a hole in the vent?

    Good Question

I have been trying to find a better way. So far I have just drilled into the vent stack and used foil tape to cover but now I have been trying to come up with a cleaner and more professional solution. What about a 1/4" nipple and cap? I just need to find out if the flue condensation will eat the nipple? What do you think

    tapping

Tap the hole with a pipe tap (3/8, 1/4) and use a PVC plug.

Here's how I check all pvc vented appliances...

Drill a 5/16" hole. Tap it with a 1/8" NPT tap, don't send the tap all the way in or the plug will be loose because of nylon to plastic. Install 1/8" NPT nylon plug with a little teflon tape, and your good to go.

Source for 1/8" NPT nylon pipe plugs:

By the way, the useof a metal/steel bolt is a bad idea, as the metal will corode and the bolt could snap off and drop down the pipe.

Also, if you need plugs for regular flue pipe, drill a 5/16" hole, then use part # 9563K83 - 5/16" nickel plated 5/16" hole plug near the bottom of this page:

A 7/16\" hole will provide for a 1/4\" NPT tap then a plastic plug
