i inspected an old coal converted steam boiler yesterday the burner install permit is from 1957 problem is the glass gauge reading never changes even when draining the low water cut off the nipple on that attaches to low water cut off and glass gauge is all rusted and has corrosion built up on it customer doesnt want to deal with the problem even tho there is no way of telling the proper water level in the boiler she would rather wait till spring all i could say to her is good luck call me when it melts down or goes bang

I usually stick a wire

into the nipples, after first removing the valve stems on the sight glass holders. If the wire is bent slightly, you can ream the nipples out a bit.

Glass valves

If the glass blow down, bottom valve closed first, doesn't work I unscrew the glass isolation valves and push whatever fits through to clean out the mud, a 3/16 xtra long drill bit usually works but as SH said sometimes you need a coat hanger or other finer wire.

the lower nipple is corroded customer does not want to spend money on replacing it would cost to much money
