I am looking to add radiant floor heat to a small bath area. Existing hot water boiler in house roughly 10' away from area. Any design tips at minimum cost would greatly be appreciated.

    Sounds like...

... a staple-up job to me. Don't forget the plates - the Thermofin plates from radiant engineering are the best, IMHO.

Then pipe it off of the primary loop with a very small circulator that runs whenever the thermostat upstairs calls for heat. While you're at it, why not also add a towel warmer with a TRV to keep the towels toasty?

Lastly, once it all works, insulate from below, leaving a 2" air space between the insulation and the tubing. Ideally, use a foil-faced foam batting that is sealed in place.

    Good Luck!

    How small and how often?

If it's a small interior bath space electric mats would be worth a look, especially if you only need it warm in the AM and after work. Pretty nice programmable stats for this now.

Very small interior bath and your idea sounds good. Looking for t-stat control and various warming periods, not only morn, and evening times. Where can I find info on electric pads? SO small of an area that I am looking for the cheapest possible, but to do It Right..... Thanks.

    What the pro sells

I would go with whatever brand your contractor has used before and likes. Take a look at www.warmlyyours.com tempzone under tile or environ2 under carpet. Or, deltatherm at www.delta-therm.com when this was posted in the past several respondents said to check delta therm.

There are a couple things that have been overlooked. A heat loss should be done. Then a radiant survay. Staple up with plates may not be enough to heat a small bathroom. You may need the towel radiator to provide the extra btus needed.

Lastly, once it all works, insulate from below, leaving a 2" air space between the insulation and the tubing. Ideally, use a foil-faced foam batting that is sealed in place.

Also when using the plates you do not leave a 2" air gap, you only do that if you are not using plates. and the foil-faced foam if a waste too since it will for a layer of dust and not reflect. Spend the extra money on the right and better R value insulation.

And hire a Radiant pro. Try locate contractor on the Radiant Panel Associasion http://www.radiantpanelassociation.org/i4a/pages/index.cfm?pageid=1
