Range venting question

This may not be the perfect place to ask this question but you guys have always come through with the answers so here goes. I recently purchased a home with gas appliances. The old gas range has got to go. I want to put in a new gas range. The question or problem is, where the range is now located it has one of those pretend Microwave hood things above it. Probably been that way for 25 years. Is that safe? Doesn't really seem to vent anywhere. I was planning on simply putting the new range there but I am worried about venting safely. What about a downdraft range? I've read mixed reviews on how well they work. Anybody have any thoughts I'd be please to hear. And yes I have my CO detectors in already :)

check
I would check with the stove manufacture. If you check their installation guide it will give you the needed clearance. I however would not go by what the salesman has to say, ask him to open the book that comes with the unit!! I personally would install a range hood if possible. As to a down draft unit, I have installed a number of these with little or no issue's. It of course depends on the make of the unit.0
