Making water?

I don't know if this is uncommon, but over the summer when the boiler wasn't firing up very much, the water level in the system rose. Water is not automaticly added to the system. Any ideas where that extra water is coming from?
It is particularly perplexing, because over the winter it seems as though I have to add water from time to time.
