Out with the old and in with the new

We burned the midnight oil last night to finish this install in one day. This was the original boiler with the house. All the houses in this neighborhood have or had this set up. Utica boiler, 3 zones with zone valves. When you look at the pictures take a look at the water heater. It was bought at Lowes and a Lowes subcontractor/plumber installed it. The Owner said 3 different guys came to install it. The tank is propped up on wood pieces, the cold water line has 3 couplings in less than 12 inches, hot water has 2. It looks like Mr. Chicken took a #$#@# on the solder joints. These are the pros we compete with? Yeah Right. Anyway enjoy the pictures of the new Munchy T-80 wall-hung. These boilers are whisper silent. The dungs gas valve used now are much more user friendly to set up the combustion numbers. We used white tile board as a backer. We left some pipe stubs to be able to install a indirect tank in the future. The home owner said it is a beautiful work of art. Very nice folks to work for. They could not display enough hospitality to us. A long day but well worth it.

I typically do not bring this up

But Mahhk is not really my partner. He is just a electrician I sub out the wiring to. Oh Yeah, he is pretty good at lifting heavy stuff too.

    That's a beautiful install

It's rare when an install can look better than the diagrams we see in the manuals that come with these units. But there you have it, in technicolor no less. I sure hope that the homeowners were grateful because that system should give them reliable service for years to come...

As for the gas water heater, I'm still scratching my head why they didn't junk it at the same time... Things like "while we're at it" come to mind, but I suppose you know who they'll call when (not if) that cheapo WH fails.

Plus, it'll be interesting to note whether your installation manages to develop any of the "patina" of the unit it replaces. Looks like those garden-quality gate valves on the old boiler hemorrhaged like crazy...

If there is one thing I the homeowner engineer would have done differently, it's the placement of the outlet for the sump pump. I prefer my electricals above potential water sources... Plus, is that on-off safety switch accessible if there is a real problem with the unit? Reaching it while the unit is on fire might be a bit of a stretch?

Ah, but I digress. Congrats again on a super unit install. There should be smiles all around and I hope the Java flowed freely...

    I agree

with you on the wiring. The electrician I work with is a real PITA. But you know how hard it is to find good help these days. Thanks for the nice comments.

Probably not a great idea to post the homeowner's name without permission, though. (Look at the filenames.) I know I'd be unhappy about that.

    Well,

... there are only 109 Connelly's in the 518 area code according to Google. Who wants to volunteer to figure out which one it is?

Now if there was a bone to pick with Darin and the privacy of his clients, it would be on the testimonials page of his website. The e-mail addresses there are displayed in plaintext...so every robot that scrapes e-mail addresses for spammers can grab them. Ditto for the info address...

If I may be so bold, have a talk with your web-site admin to see if they can at least uni-code those mailtos. That makes it a lot harder for scrapers to get them. Even better are some of the Javascript encoders that are so random that the scrapers can't figure them out (not programmed for it). Your site, your choice, naturally.

If you're really motivated, consider asking for a comprehensive .htaccess file to ensure that most naughty bots are kept on the outside. If you're really, really motivated, go for a honeypot trap and kick the vandals out before they can snoop around to any measurable degree. Contact me off-line if you want some details. Cheers!

    Thanks Constantin

At first I was annoyed with Mr. Kalia making that comment. Mr. Connelly would certainly have no problem talking to another one of our customers to give a reference. But probably would not want to get super spammed. I never mind getting called out on the mat of truth as long as people can back up their talk. I will contact our web site administrator and rectify this issue. Thanks. If I do have further questions I will contact you.
