Our salesman forgot to mention something

I've worked in cluttered homes before and this one ranks high . We had builder's special Federal boiler 2 zones and rotted out Bock heater to change out . Of course the chamber falls out from the bottom and there was no air movement in that room . Is vermiculite good to breathe ?

  • You can just make out Kenny

Literally a path wide enough for the handtruck , and nothing else . Another pic is the boiler room . We wanted to move all that stuff out of there , but there was no other place for it to go . We were playing leap fog the tool boxes all day long .

  • Burnham V84 and Bock heater

We reused the Riello from the old boiler , it ran just fine in it's new home . This was the first Spirovent we've ever installed . I was gonna see if it would get all the air out of the 3 zones of baseboard on it's own , but I purged out the system anyway . The 2nd pic is the shims we used to push up the hanging sheetrock above the boiler . There was no wood to screw it into up there . Yep , we cracked the sheetrock doing it too . You know what they say about good deeds .

    Don't understand...

Why no indirect DHW!? Salesman's $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$??? Am I missing something?

    Jed

  • Nope

The price for an indirect and an oil fired is about the same . Why , is it much more to install a direct fired where you work ? Enough of an upsell to make a difference in the commision ?

It might have something to do with the more than normal failure rates of any brand indirect we use . Or maybe the homeowner requested an oil fired .
  • No they don't

Most of the stuff outside the boiler room was inside it before we got there . The problem was they ran out of room outside , with plenty left inside .
  • The salesman

is gonna have bleeding ears when I get done with him . There was no reason why we had to work in this condition . 6 steps up from that room was a huge living room . More than enough space to move all that stuff out of our way . But I know how the conversation went when the salesman was there - " Oh , don't worry , just clear a path to the boiler and heater and they'll be just fine ! " 2 extra hours of work is a conservative guess .

  • I could

make the call to leave if it's way too cluttered . It's a no win situation because if I cancel we have to go back , unload everything and presumably load another job on and leave the shop again . But this time we leave at 10:30 or later . It's best to take the bad situation you know .

    Where?

    Ron,

Where is this house? That looks very much like my 45 year old Federal boiler and the boiler room looks right about where it is in my house. And the room leading into the boiler room in my house looks about the same :) Of course I'll clear a little bigger path for my installers who are putting in my new Weil McLain WGO-4 boiler and Weil McLain indirect heater.

    making me feel bad

:( I feel bad now, having spent the last 2 day's doing a complete house install. Which has nothing in it. :) Wide open space....Ron you do incredible work under less than decent conditions!! If you ever decide to move north let me know...;) Question for you though, the indirect failures your having, is it the tank or the coil's? Do you have that problem with coil's on boiler's also? Just curious....
  • I'm envious

I hope it's me installing the system . This was in North Bellmore , New York .

I hope noone misunderstands me - I do not blame the homeowner . Most people don't realize how much room we require to install a system as quick and as good as possible . I put the blame on the saleman who does know what we require and did not go over what had to be done before we start the work .

  • No problems with coils

And they make up maybe 90 percent of our installs .

It started with the Phase 3 which we installed exclusively for years . When we had problems with them , we switched to the Megastor and Alliance , same problems . We dabbled in the Contender and a few Smart Phase 3s . Now we use mostly the Burnham Alliance G glass lined indirect . I'm not sure what was failing in these tanks . But I keep hearing we have a high chlorine content in our water .

Hey , you should feel bad , with all that room to do your work . Every try sweating a pipe while standing on a stack of LEGOs and 3 cans of minced clams from 1969 ? Just kidding , thanks Lchmb .

North Bellmore, cool. That's only about 10 minutes from here. Maybe you are doing mine :) I guess that depends who you work for (ordered mine from my incumbent oil co). Seems like you do good work, so I'd be happy to have you show up here.

I hope I picked a good system. I did a lot of research first.

WGO-4, Carlin EZ burner and WM Indirect (I think it's a rebadged Smart Phase 3). Hope I don't have those indirect problems you mention.

    Great Job!

Looks like a much needed improvement! I admire the easy access to everything, the neat wiring, and everything else I can see... except for the open box full of wiring... that's covered by now, right?

I too wonder how a oil-fired water heater can compete with a quality indirect unit. From my perspective as a HO, that's two burners to maintain, etc. Besides, the efficiency on that oil-fired water heater cannot be that great.

Anyway, kudos for getting the job done under difficult conditions. With any luck the HO's appreciate what you did for them. Cheers!
  • I work for

Meenan Oil , and we do install Weil Mclain boilers . Yes , they are a top of the line American made cast boiler . And the Carlin EZ is also a top of the line and a very quiet burner . I haven't had much of an experience with the new Smart series of indirects , and I think you're right , the WM is a Smart with a different jacket . I didn't want it to sound like our indirect experiences have been catastophic , it hasn't . It's just that we had more than normal failure rates for a few years straight . It has tapered off though . Hope all goes well on your new boiler install David .
  • Oh yeah , the open box

is the aquastat , and we did put the cover on when we finished . But losing the cover does happen sometimes .....

A typical oil fired heater can't compete , efficiency wise , with a new boiler / indirect combo . But I bet the Bock can get real close . The only problem is that a Bock will typically last maybe 12 years with a 5 year warantee - not long considering most indirects have a lifetime warantee . And you're right , theres an extra burner to service and flue to vent .

I wonder what a fuel usage comparison would look like between a boiler/indirect and boiler/oil fired heater - if the boiler was shut down in the warmer months ?

Thank you very much Constantin for the kind words .

    No

    You aren't doing my install.

I'm using General. They've kept my ancient Federal running for 6 years now, somehow, so I think they'll do fine putting this in.

on the old pick on the water heater there is a half inch coiled piped what is that for shock absorber

I think this would depend on a number of variables...

... for example, is the IDWH on a primary zone or using a tankless coil as a source? The tankless coil is a terrible way to heat domestic water.

On a steady-state basis, the boiler should beat the WH hands-down. Minimum AFUE for a boiler is 80%, a WH makes it maybe up to 60% unless you're talking submerged firing chamber, whirly exhaust, etc.

    Hello Ron

Your work is the neatest thing in the house.

You Should give the salesman an earfull. I would have told the HO, the cleaner the area the less it will cost you. I know your trying to be nice but there is No excuse for that type of clutter for you to work in. You'll probable get a complaint that there is an oil stain on the daughters bedsheet.

Note to David; You should change OIL companys. Anyone who has a chance to have Ron install thier system and does not take advantage of it is loosing out.

Meenan Oil should have stickers made up : System installed by Ron ! These house's would demand a higher sales price on the market.

    Scott
