Internet purchases

Okay, here's the scoop.

Is there any manufcaturer out ther that warranties thier equipment if it's sold over the 'net?

Case in point.

I got off the phone this afternoon with the gent about a boiler changeout. I quoted him a turn-key price on a high efficency boiler. Too much. I then quoted him a turn-key price on a 80% efficiency boiler made by another company.

Sez he, "I can get that boiler off the net for $XXXX.XX, including shipping. Where does the extra come in?"

I replied "That includes the extra parts like the
circulators, my time and overhead and so forth, not to mention combustion air and the like..."

"But that's too much!"

"i'm sorry, but that's my price."

End of conversation.

    well

If he can get it off the web why is he calling you? Tell him to order it, and install it. It will come with directions' right? And anyone can do it right? It's not rocket science...Bet he would want you to warranty it if something fail's. Even though he bought it....

    DIY'er

I know of a great guy, plant operation supervisor, which ordered a boiler from a wholesaler and asked me for a couple of tips. Who was going to install it himself, I asked him a couple of questions to see where he was with this, like bypass and thermal shock? Notta a clue, what are you using for the expansion tank, where are you placing the expansion tank? His response, don’t have one now, honest and works fine! So I printed him a copy from the BG site on the bypass…please read this and thought, I’d go over there and show him what I’d do and how I would put it in? Was there most of the day and he said to me, I would have had a huge mess, hadn’t you stopped by, thanks much. I said no problem, I’d stop by in a couple day anyhow; Why’s that? He said. Because you would be getting cold :)

If these people understood, there is actually a bit of skill that we carry in to each job...

    Why would

a manufacturer not warranty his product?

It is probably required by some law anyway.

Sometimes there is enough crying on this site to warrant (no pun intended) selling towels. LOL

    Big question for manuf

Many companies work diligently to "persuade" internet sellers to not sell their products. They want to sell two step thru the dist and dealer. Definite channels, definite responsibilites, definite support. For many manuf this is like the carnival game where you stand with the hammer and try to hit the head that pops out of the hole.

The manuf has to be very careful to avoid Robinson-Patman and "other" legal issues. Some manuf are going to distributor agreements specifically stating that they will not support warranties for equipment sold over the internet. Personally, I like local business to stay local.

I got a call from a homeowner last yr who told me I had to send him a conversion kit. Internet purchase, of course, and he rec'd NG when he wanted LP. He had all ready gone to all the distributors in the area and pissedthem off. Believe me, I know. I basically gave him the "not no way, not no how" speech. Told him to package that baby back up and return it to his "vendor" for the correct unit. Anyway, I didn't hear from him for about a yr and recently got a call for service. I told him to go rightback to his good internet vendor for service. I did ask him if he thought he had saved any money given the aggravation and hassle.

Oh, and BTW, every unit is shipped with a conversion kit from the factory.

on the other hand, once the customer comes to you with a question, you have a great opportunity to create a customer for life....and isn't the money made over the course of the realtionship?

Reminds me of a bid I recently gave to a CPA on his newly purchased home. This was a complete near boiler repipe, P/S loops and splitting the home into zones and adding a lot of BB to soon to be remodeled basement rooms. "Wait a minute... boilers only cost a few hundred bucks, why is this so much to upgrade mine?" I didn't ask where his supplier was located, but would love to find boilers for a couple of hundred $$. Consumers have some interesting views and while you can't blame a guy for wanting to save a few bucks, the perception is off base when the consumer thinks our time or reasonable profit are things they do not need to pay for.
