Steam problem.. possibly getting screwed help!

Hi,
Since the heat has kicked on this year I have had little to no heat and waterhammer in the two second floor radiators.
These are the furthest from the boiler. The boiler is 4 year old burnham. Last year the system worked flawless.
Also last year all the vents (mains and radiator) were replaced. The only thing that happened this year was the oil company cleaning the boiler. I had them come out and they said that I have to have the return repiped?? I would be interested in hearing from a steam expert in the boston area if they would want to come and check it out. Thanks for any help.

Are you absolutely sure...
... that the valves on the radiators up there are either completely open or completely shut? Nothing makes a steam system hammer faster than a half-open valve... or crud stuck in it that makes it "half open". However, given the tools, etc. required to get a steam valve on and off, I'd find a professional.
So if turning the valves off and on doesn't solve the problem, call someone like Ed and see if he can diagnose it.
IMHO, unless the folks who cleaned the system changed something physically in the basement, I see no reason why the cleaning should have caused the hammering to start. In other words, that event might be coincidental, not causal.0 -
John , would you be able
to take some digital pics of the return piping and post them here ? And which part of the boiler did they clean ? Was it the fire side or the steam water ? If it was the steam water , did they add any chemicals to the boiler ?0 -
