Since it's getting close,
I wanted to bring this one back to the top of the Wall.
Please come if you can. Thanks.Retired and loving it.0 -
We have 47 people signed up
and room for 200 in an auditorium donated by Washington Gas. ALL the money we raise will go to this family to help them get though this rough time. If you're in the D.C. area, please consider coming to the seminar. Here are the details:
This is a benefit seminar. All of the proceeds will go to The Cody Fund.
Cody Johnson is a two-year-old boy who was recently diagnosed with Stage IV Neuroblastoma, a tumor of the sympathetic nervous tissue and adrenal gland. Cody is receiving treatment at the Lombardi Cancer Center of Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C. Cody is currently undergoing intensive chemotherapy which suppresses the immune system and makes him vulnerable to life- threatening infections. It is important that his living environment be clean and free of mold. The National Capitol Chapter of the Air Conditioning Contractors of America, as part of their participation in the first ever Heat the Country program, donated the labor and new heating and cooling equipment to the Cody Johnson family.
Cody's condition is terminal and the prognosis is that he has perhaps a year to live. The chapter has started a collection for funds to help the Johnson family (in addition to Cody there is his four year old sister, Daniella and six year old brother, Justin) for the holidays. Donations can be sent to ACCA-NCC at P.O. Box 4268, Silver Spring, MD 20914-4268. I am donating my time for this seminar, and Washington Gas is donating their facility. Bless them.
As for the seminar:
THE LOST ART OF STEAM HEATING
Although contractors haven't installed steam heating systems since the 1940s, you'll still find plenty of these mysterious old beasts in the basements of older buildings. Most folks run when they see them! Others stick around, solve the problems and profit from them. The difference between confusion and success is knowledge. At this seminar, you'll gain that knowledge and you'll feel comfortable with that next old steam system you run into. You'll be able to solve your customers' problems, and you'll turn your knowledge into dollars!
Take A Look at What We'll Cover...
One-Pipe Steam - We start from scratch. How do these simplest of systems work? What are the invisible things that can't be touched with a wrench, but still must be dealt with?
How to know what you're looking at - You'll see some strange things on those older jobs. What's the reason for those components? Can you change any of them? What happens when you do? You'll find out at this seminar.
Piping the Replacement Boiler - What size should the near-boiler piping be? What's the real reason for the Hartford Loop? What makes that new boiler surge? Why does it run out of water so quickly. That next job will go easier once you can "see" these things.
Air Is Everywhere! - You can heat the largest building in minutes with very little pressure when you understand the dynamics of air and how air vents work. Learn the tricks the old-timers knew well.
The Piping Beyond The Boiler Room Walls - The solution is never in the same room as the problem; the answer usually lies somewhere in the pipes. As we focus on the system, the answers become clear.
Handling Condensate - What's the difference between a condensate pump and a boiler-feed pump? When do we use one or the other? Do you need one or the other when you replace a boiler? Find out here.
Taking The Mystery Out Of The History - Vapor and vapor/vacuum heating confuse most people, but when we're done, you'll see and appreciate the simplicity and the beauty of these old systems. And you'll be able to fix them!
Trapping Steam - How long do steam traps last? Why do they fail? How do you know when they have failed? What are the two things you should never do with steam traps?
And Much, Much More - You'll have a clearer understanding of the art of steam heating when the day ends. You'll be able to solve those common residential problems that stumped you last year. And you'll be able to turn your newfound knowledge into profits the very next day.
Tickets are $99 for ACCA-NCC members and $149 for non-members. Lunch is included, and all proceeds go to The Cody Fund. CALL Pat Lupson at ACCA-NA 301-384-2222 for tickets.
Thanks for caring.

Seminar
Dan,
Thank you for donating your time towards this worthy cause. I had a chance to meet the family when we put the boiler in a few weeks ago. I saw first hand what this family is going through. I hope to see DC area contractors on the 16th. You will spend a day learning from the best about steam heat AND helping a very needy family. -DF

Hey Wayne, where do you teach this class at?
Mike0 -
It's through ACCA
as part of their 4 year Journeymans program for HVAC. The classes are held at Mongomery College in Rockville, MD. Only one of my 25 students had any previous boiler experience. We're in Scorched air contry down here ya'll. That's why it's so important for Dan H to exert his infuence and presence down here. My classroom has a computer with an internet connection and a projection screen and it's not uncommon for me to show them pictures of things on The Wall to increase their awareness of things hydronic. Next week we are looking forward to a visit from Dan Foley and his Laptop full of pictures from his projects. I feel like Captain Kangaroo with all of his special friends dropping by. (and here's Ole Bob from Munchkin land to show us about condensing boilers. Oh Boy!) My version of Mr Green Jeans. WW
