boiler feed pump
I have an old boiler feed pump on a steam boiler in a church. It is leaking excessive water from the seals. This pump has packing glands not mechanical seals. I am unfamiliar with this type of seal and would like to know what material I should use to repack this and the proceedure for doing this. Any help will be appreciated. Thank You0 -

graphite for high temp--but you will need to check the shaft for excessive wear --if its been leaking for a long time depending on the size pump --you might be better off sending it out to a pump & motor shop if you have a duplex set-up remove the 1 blank it off plug any bleeder holes wire the alternator to run the 1 pump for lead and lag -----if this is a single pump unit you need to get it out and back in fast have a game plan before you start0 -
pump seals...
Given the environment these pumps have to work in, pump seals are always leaking, so having a game plan or routine maintenance schedule works. If you don't already, why not start now. I'd,(depending on the size and overall cost) buy another pump and install it. Take the old pump and either send it out to be rebuilt or rebuild it yourself and that way,, a)you have fixed the immediate problem..b) you now have a backup pump ready to go into service when needed..c) and will know now,.. where to get replacement parts....and d) you don't have to work on a hot pump...Work like a gentleman....Robert O'Connor/NJ0
