I am a small Plumbing Contractor in the Metro Boston area.
I've been tarring my hair out trying to find a water-hammer in a one pipe steam sys to a 3rd floor rad.
1. the rad air vent was squirting water, and rad had massive banging from water-hammer, I replace vent and pitched rad towads the service vale. Then I cranked the psi down as low as the 404 pressuretrol would go.
2. I checked the steam riser all the way back to the boiler for pitch and is was o.k. ( i gave it a little more)
Im still getting a realy loud water hammer.
3. I removed and checked the main line vent on the return It seems ok any paticular one I should be using its 3/4"
Im still getting water hammer.
I went back to the rad. and removed the air vent, I put my mouth on the hole and blew in to see if rad was clear of water, I got some air back out, is this normal or should I be able to blow all the way back to the boiler with no restricion?
Im still getting water in rad.
CAN ANY ONE HELP??

Have you disconnected the radiator to ensure that the valve is functioning, fully open, unobstructed and that the tailpiece into the radiator is clear of scale and sediment?0 -
Check the shutoff valve on the radiator
it may have come apart inside, preventing water from draining back to the main.
If the entire riser is not exposed, there may be a horizontal section you can't see that is off-pitch. Try setting the radiator on 1/2-inch-thick shims under all four legs, this might cure the problem.
