Gravity and counterflow on the same steamer

Bad stairs , low ceilings , and a tight spot . This boiler has 2 gravity return mains and 4 counterflow pipes which I think go right to individual radiators . I've installed hundreds of steam boilers , but this is the first one since I was a newbie where I cannot visualize how to reconnect anything above it . I hate it when the pipes are all tied in right off the top of the boiler . We're going back tomorrow to finish up on the ECT3 we installed in this ones place , and I'll post some pics if it comes out OK . I will give fair warning though - we will be using some copper on one counterflow pipe , maybe 2 . By the looks of the structure , I'll bet the copper pipes will outlast the building .

    get out the gorilla suits

hire the Rooster to pipe it out!! pvc templates first, of course. what a party.
  • Finished job

Well , not totally finished at this point . Not the best looking we ever did , but we managed to pitch all the pipes the correct way . I kept it down to 1 copper pipe going up off the main . We had a hell of a time getting the pipes connected on the new main we ran on the left side . We had to thread 2 of the pipes in place with no room to spin the threader .

Theres a few pics , one is the stairs - you had to duck when you got to the last few steps to avoid clonging your head . Another one is the return work Kenny started and Sal finished today .

What a nasty situation to be in. You guys did a great job.
  • It worked out

alot better than I thought it would . But we all left this one with hard head hits . I'll never understand how a home can be built with crappy access to the heart of the house . Thank you Hvacfreak .
