This house is on the smaller size, but all the floors are used for living space.
The first floor is cast iron baseboard hooked up like 2 pipe steam, with traps on the returns.
The second floor is radiators hooked up to one pipe steam.(vents on rads.)
The third floor is hot water, copper B.B.
Homeowner has 2 problems,The Steam bangs at night. He says only in the upstairs,He also wants to remove the 2nd floor rads to gian space, and remove pipes going up trough the living room. He thinks by removing the 2nd floor rads., it will elimante the banging. I explained that the problem, and the cause are rarely in the same room.
Boiler lokks to be a 10yr old Burnham. The hot water zone is piped in the bottom.(no exchanger)
Since we need to elimante the 2nd floor rads and the exposed pipes,I'm thinkg of replacing with hot h20 B.B.
So my questions are, Can I use to hot water zones off of steam boiler?
As for the banging, check press.,flush returns, and rebuild traps?
Thanks, Nick

Check the line the traps dump into
Does it have it's own vent, and no steam connection into it?
If not, the traps don't belong there.
How is this zone piped?

Zone pipes
The steam zones look to be coming off one big header then into a return. The steam is on a zone by itself. Only the 3rd floor water is separate zone.
Couldn't I use zone valves on the existing water part to zone it separet?I'm sure my second zone would be samll enough that I could use 1/2" pipe.0
