boiler piping

Question1:When "pumping away" is there a minimum distance of horizontal pipe you should have before entering the air scoop? We just installed a new system that was air locked 2 days later and the auto vent didn't seem to be working right. I'm wondering if turbulence in the pipe was causing the air to miss the scoop? Also, should you avoid having valves in this horizontal pipe, could that add to the problem?
Question2: In piping diagrams some show the water feed piped in between the expansion tank and the air scoop, some show it piped in the horizontal supply just before the air scoop. Are either of these acceptable or is one better than the other?
Thanks for any advice.
